Overview
Two and a half days in Rome with a 2½ and a 5½ year old, then straight onto the ship. The whole plan is built around one constraint: Evelyn naps 1–3 PM, and we want to be able to walk back to the room for it and walk right back out again.

Tuesday, October 20 — Arrival day
- MorningLand at Fiumicino. Taxi to the hotel, drop bags, and get everyone outside into daylight — it's the fastest way to reset four body clocks.
- MiddayFirst real meal in the neighborhood. Nothing ambitious.
- 1:00–3:00 PMNap window. Back at the hotel. Adults nap too — today especially.
- 3:30–4:00 PMWalk to St Peter's Basilica. Free entry, no reservation needed.
- Late afternoonCastel Sant'Angelo from the outside — the bridge with the angel statues is the whole point, and the girls can run it.
- ~6:00 PMEarly dinner. Do not fight for a late table on day one.
- If energy holdsShort loop through Piazza Navona on the way back. Optional — skip it without guilt.
- 3:30–4:00 PMSame plan — St Peter's is almost entirely indoors once you're through the door. Rain cover on the stroller for the walk over.

St Peter's, practicalOpen 7 AM–8 PM daily, last entry around 7:15 PM. Free, no reservation required — a paid timed slot with audio guide exists but isn't necessary. Strollers aren't allowed inside; there's storage under the portico. Bring the carrier for Evelyn. Security screening and shoulders/knees covered.

The dome of St Peter's was designed by Michelangelo, who was 71 when he started it and never saw it finished. It's still the tallest dome in the world — and the letters in the gold band running around the inside are each about six feet tall, taller than Daddy.

Wednesday, October 21 — Colosseum day
- 8:30–10:00 AMColosseum interior only. Earliest practical slot. Keep it short and leave while it's still fun — skip the full Forum and Palatine traverse entirely.
- ~10:15 AMTaxi back toward the hotel. Don't walk it with two tired kids.
- MiddayLunch near the hotel.
- 1:00–3:00 PMNap window — non-negotiable. This is what buys us the entire evening.
- 3:15 PMVilla Borghese — playground and open space. The first thing all day that's actually for the girls rather than for us.

- DuskTrevi Fountain for the coin toss, lit up and at its best.
- EveningPantheon, then Piazza Navona for dinner and gelato.
- Any legTaxi the moment legs are done. There is no prize for walking all of it.
- 8:30 AMKeep the early Colosseum. It's booked, it's timed, and wet stone is atmospheric. Go anyway.
- AfternoonDrop Villa Borghese — a wet playground isn't worth the trip up there.
- 3:15 PM onStay in the tight Pantheon / Navona / Trevi circuit instead. All three are within a few minutes of each other and of covered cafes.
- BonusThe Pantheon in the rain is the one to see — the oculus is open to the sky and the rain falls straight through onto the floor.
- DuskTrevi coin toss still happens. Then dinner and gelato in Navona.
Ticket windowColosseum hours Oct 1–24 are 8:30 AM–6:30 PM, last admission 5:30 PM. Tickets release exactly 30 days out — book on September 21. Under-18s are free but still need their own reserved timed slot plus a small booking fee, so all four of us need tickets.
Wednesdays near the VaticanWednesday mornings around St Peter's Square tend to be busier because of the general audience pattern. That's a seasonal tendency rather than a confirmed date — and it's moot for us either way, since Wednesday is Colosseum day, not Vatican day.

The Colosseum could hold about 50,000 people, and they got everyone out in minutes through 80 numbered entrance arches — the same idea as the gate number on a boarding pass. You can still see the Roman numerals carved above some of them.
Thursday, October 22 — Embarkation
- MorningBreakfast, then one short neighborhood walk — Navona or the Pantheon, whichever we've seen less of. Nothing ticketed, nothing timed.

- 11:00–11:30 AMPrivate transfer departs the hotel for Civitavecchia. Target window — to be confirmed against the actual all-aboard time.

Thursday's real jobThere is nothing to see today that's worth risking the transfer over. If the morning walk gets cut, it gets cut.

Where we're staying
The area matters more than the property. Pantheon / Piazza Navona was chosen for one reason: we can walk back to the room at 1 PM and walk right back out at 3 PM without losing the afternoon to transit.

Why this neighborhood
Rough walking times from the Pantheon area. Everything on the evening plan is inside a 20-minute radius, which is what makes a 1 PM retreat and a 3 PM relaunch realistic.

The nap mathA 1–3 PM nap only costs us two hours if the walk home is under fifteen minutes. From anywhere further out it costs three or four, and the evening disappears with it. That's the whole reason the neighborhood was locked before the hotel.
What rolls and what doesn't
Stroller and gear
Rome's sanpietrini — the black basalt cobblestones — are hard on small wheels. But this leg ends on a ship, and everything has to fit through restaurant doors and into taxis.

Stroller rain cover
Late October is one of Rome's wetter months. The rain plans all assume Evelyn stays dry in the stroller.
On the cobblesSanpietrini are worst in the old center — which is exactly where we're based. Expect a rattly ride and plan on carrying the stroller up the occasional curb or step. It's survivable with good wheels; it's miserable with cheap ones.

The plan
Private transfer, door to terminal
Roughly €160–250. Child seats available on request. Hotel lobby straight to the cruise terminal, about 50 miles and 1 hr 15 min northwest of Rome.
Target departure: 11:00–11:30 AM from the hotel, to be confirmed against the actual all-aboard time once Royal Caribbean publishes it.
Why not the trainThe train to Civitavecchia was genuinely tempting for the novelty — the girls would love it. But it means station stairs, platform changes, and a walk or shuttle at the far end, all with cruise luggage and a 2½ year old. Private transfer stays the plan for embarkation morning. Save the train for a trip where a missed connection doesn't mean a missed ship.
Before you bookGet the all-aboard time first, then work backwards. Book the transfer to arrive comfortably ahead of it, not to arrive exactly at it — October traffic on the SS1 Aurelia is unpredictable.

Why this sailing existsLegend of the Seas spent summer 2026 in the western Mediterranean and moves to Fort Lauderdale for her winter Caribbean season. Our Rome–Barcelona hop and the transatlantic that follows are that repositioning — which is why a brand-new ship is doing an unusual two-night leg out of Civitavecchia in late October.
